Tomorrow: Kindle 2

Although the Kindle has been a success for Amazon, often times, the Kindle is sold out, I doubt the Kindle, specifically the Kindle 2.0, will prove as successful for Amazon as the iPod was and is for Apple. Steve Jobs once responded to Amazon’s release of the Kindle saying, “It doesn’t matter how good or bad the product is, the fact is that people don’t read anymore…. Forty percent of the people in the U.S. read one book or less last year. The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read anymore.”

In any case, Amazon is set to release the Kindle 2 tomorrow, February 9, 2008. The e-reader will allegedly sport an improved screen and interface, a longer battery life and a thinner profile–all for a lower price.

While the Kindle promises to compact space-consuming books down to the width of a pencil, the Kindle will not be able to account for the feel of a tangible page (for me, all pages feel different) or the anticipation of studying a book’s cover art. In a way, the Kindle will do for books what the internet has done for newspapers.
